For the 2001 model year Honda released an upgraded version of the popular CBR600F4 to take a lead in the very competitive middle-weight 600 cc class. The most notable of the improvements for this year was the inclusion of fuel injection for an increase of power and smoother throttle response. Honda claimed a 5% increase in horse power from the carbureted F4, making it the lightest and most powerful Honda motorcycle in its time. The F4i continued the reputation of the F models for finding a balance between street comfort and sporty performance. The rear sprocket increased from a 45 tooth to a 46 tooth for better acceleration.

Honda also included some styling changes due to criticisms of the styling of the F4 being too bland. The 2001 F4i features an improved two-tier seat and a dual headlight front cowl. The F4i features a large analog tachometer with an all new digital display with a speedometer, odometer, clock, engine temperature read-out, and trip meters.
